RENO, Nev. (AP) — Washoe County sheriff's deputies have arrested three suspects in connection with an 18-month undercover investigation into food stamp fraud that detectives say cost taxpayers more than $376,000.
State welfare and law enforcement officials said in a statement Tuesday the investigation targeted two stores in the Reno-Sparks area — Dakota Foods Inc. of Sparks and the Family Mart on 4th Street in Reno.
The owner of Dhaka Foods, 42-year-old Mohammad Rassel Ibrahim, and the part-owner of the Family Mart, 46-year-old Tania Halim, were arrested on May 12 along with the third suspect who worked at both stores, 59-year-old MD Abdul Hasnat.
Authorities say they conspired with 200 food stamp recipients to obtain funds fraudulently. All three face fraud-related charges.
