This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.
After a long career working for the Union Pacific railroad and its subsidiary the Utah Parks Company, Henry Scholzen decided he was ready for a career change. He feared a transfer was imminent and didn't want to leave his Southern Utah home.
Henry decided he wanted to start his own business. He formed Scholzen Produce and raised chickens, turkeys and rabbits to sell to restaurants in the Los Angeles area. On return trips he would freight in construction supplies for Southern Utah contractors.
As the economy changed, Henry branched out into product lines. He sold supplies to contractors on the Zions National Park tunnel and highway. When the tunnel was completed in 1930, he sold contractor equipment and supplies from a small warehouse in Hurricane. Thus, Scholzen Products Company, as it is known today, was born.
Scholzen Products Company is a wholesale distributor that sells a variety of supplies for water works, steel, welding, plumbing, industrial projects and fencing. Bruce Ballard, company president, says Scholzen has come a long way in the last 80 years. Technology, including a new online catalog, has aided the company's growth as well as an expanded product mix. Water works products, such as PVC pipe, and steel account for a high percentage of the company's sales.
Because Scholzen Products Company has been around for so many years, Bruce says the company has developed strong relationships with clients that go back decades. Employees, many of whom have been with the company for years, are knowledgeable and have the expertise to assist customers promptly and professionally.
Bruce says it has been a successful 80 years and he hopes to see the company continue to grow. Although Henry died many years ago, his family has carried on his legacy. Henry's grandchildren and great-grandchildren are now leading Scholzen Products Company into a new generation of family ownership.
For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
