CLEVELAND (AP) — Who fired the fatal shots? A judge in Cleveland says there's no way to know for sure. So he has acquitted officer Michael Brelo in the deaths of two black men who were killed amid a barrage of 137 police bullets while sitting in a car. After the verdict, sheriff's deputies stood in front of the courthouse carrying clear shields as protesters chanted, "Hands up! Don't shoot!"

CLEVELAND (AP) — The protests have continued into the evening in Cleveland, following the acquittal of a white police officer in the shooting deaths of two black men. About 150 protesters marched through the middle of downtown streets, temporarily blocking intersections as they chanted anti-police slogans. They passed by large crowds leaving a Cleveland Indians game, and made downtown vehicle and pedestrian traffic even more congested.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The search for James Horn is over. He'd been accused last month of holding his former girlfriend captive in a crate at their home in western Missouri. And he was suspected of killing the former girlfriend and her 17-year-old son this week. Police say they shot and killed Horn today after they found him hiding in a closet in an abandoned building at a state wildlife area. They say when officers told him to surrender, he threatened them with a handgun.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The operator of the oil pipeline that spilled thousands of gallons of crude on the California coast says it had a safe shutdown process in place. Plains All American Pipeline's safety director said today that its system of having operators remotely shut down the line was safer than having a computer do it automatically. Patrick Hodgins was responding to reports that the pipeline was the only one in the county not required to have an automatic shut-off valve.

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AP) — Archbishop Oscar Romero has been beatified by Roman Catholic officials at a ceremony in his native El Salvador. It's a first step toward possible sainthood for the controversial cleric who was assassinated 35 years ago. He was beloved by El Salvador's poor people, but conservatives considered him to be too close to the left-leaning movements that preceded the country's civil war.
