DUBLIN (AP) — Polls are open in Ireland today as voters decide whether to legalize same-sex marriage after a months-long public debate. Polls suggest the referendum on amending the Irish constitution will pass but government officials and gay rights activists are expressing caution given Ireland's track record in producing surprise referendum results.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is expected to make a decision today on what happens to the National Security Agency's bulk collection of Americans' phone records. The House has left town, having passed a bill to end the practice, while replacing it with case-by-case searches and extending two other expiring surveillance provisions. If the Senate doesn't act, the laws authorizing the programs will expire June 1, and officials say they will lose valuable surveillance tools.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says increasing anti-Semitism has created an intimidating environment worldwide for Jewish families. He'll address one of the largest Jewish congregations in Washington today to highlight efforts to combat the problem. He'll speak before Congregation Adas Israel in observance of Jewish American Heritage Month. Obama says, however, that being critical of Israeli government policies is not anti-Jewish.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The California Highway Patrol is about to release its report on a deadly bus-truck crash more than a year ago that killed 10 people, including five high school students. The agency first meets today with family members of those killed in the head-on collision between the bus and a FedEx semi-trailer about 100 miles north of Sacramento. The biggest remaining question is: What caused the crash?
CORNING, N.Y. (AP) — It started out on the railroad and eventually turned into famous cookware. Now, Pyrex cookware is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The glass once known as Nonex was used for railroad lanterns. The Corning Museum of Glass is marking the centennial with an exhibition devoted to the kitchen staple that started the country cooking in glass.
