BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A former Middleton city councilman has been sentenced to eight years in prison and will spend at least two years in prison before being eligible for parole.

The Idaho Statesman reports (http://bit.ly/1Ejif3Q ) 56-year-old Bradley Spencer was sentenced Tuesday and was also ordered to pay $750 in fines.

Court documents say that Spencer told police he repeatedly had sex with a 17-year-old girl while knowing she was a minor. He told investigators that he and the girl were in love.

Spencer was arrested in September after the girl and her father told police about the sexual relationship.

Spencer resigned from the Middleton City Council Sept. 8.
