Authorities say about 500 soldiers and civilians have been killed since the weekend. The extremists are going door-to-door looking for police and pro-government forces. Bodies have been thrown into the Euphrates River.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho lawmakers have approved federally mandated rules designed to make it easier for parents to collect child support. Backers say the law that was undone would have jeopardized U.S. involvement in an international treaty and threatened to collapse the state's payment system because of the loss of millions in federal funds. Opponents say the revised bill is an unconstitutional overreach by federal authorities that could subject U.S. courts to rulings made elsewhere under Islamic law.
WACO, Texas (AP) — More than 36 hours after a motorcycle gang shootout in Waco that left nine people dead, investigators continue to process the evidence. A police spokesman says the nine killed were all members of biker gangs, as were the 18 people who were taken to hospitals with injuries that include stab and gunshot wounds. There were so many arrests that suspects were taken to a convention center until they could be processed today.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Federal investigators say they haven't ruled out the possibility that an object may have struck the windshield of the locomotive of the train the crashed last week in Philadelphia. Investigators are certain a gunshot did not strike the train. FBI agents have performed testing on a grapefruit-sized fracture on the left side of the Amtrak locomotive's windshield. The crash killed eight people. Meanwhile, service from Philadelphia to New York resumed today.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The bird flu outbreak in the U.S. could wind up carrying a price tag of nearly $1 billion. The estimate is from agricultural economists in Minnesota and Iowa, the two hardest hit states. Iowa has lost 20 million chickens that lay eggs for food use. Minnesota, the top turkey state, has lost more than 8 million birds. Federal officials say the outbreak has affected 15 states.
