BAGHDAD (AP) — A spokesman for the governor of Iraq's Anbar province says the provincial capital, Ramadi, has been "completely taken" by the Islamic State group and "the military is fleeing." Online video shows Humvees, trucks and other equipment purportedly speeding out of Ramadi, with some soldiers gripping onto their sides. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi (HY'-dahr ahl ah-BAH'-dee) has ordered security forces not to abandon their posts across Anbar province, apparently fearing the extremists could capture the entire province.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Prosecutors in a Mexican border state say a group of youths aged 11 to 15 tortured, killed and buried a 6-year-old boy as part of what they considered "playing." A statement by the Chihuahua state prosecutors' office says the minors admitted Thursday's killing in a poor neighborhood of the state capital. The prosecutors' statement expresses concern over a killing that shows "social decomposition" and an "absence of values." The two 15-year-olds face criminal charges. The younger children were turned over to juvenile authorities.
HAVANA (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says 38 migrants from Cuba who had been stuck in a legal limbo aboard a Coast Guard ship have been sent home to Cuba, after weeks of waiting. Migrants are ordinarily repatriated quickly under an agreement between the U.S. and Cuba intended to discourage risky sea journeys by people seeking to reach the United States. But a U.S. official said Cuban authorities had balked at accepting the 38 because they had left the country legally, with tourist visas from the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia.
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A powerful storm system stretching from Texas to Minnesota is bringing heavy rains, flash flooding and the threat of severe weather. The National Weather Service says tornadoes touched down in southwestern Oklahoma early today and another touched down yesterday in Missouri east of Kansas City. Scattered severe storms were expected to develop today in eastern Minnesota, western Wisconsin and parts of Missouri, Illinois and Arkansas.
BOSTON (AP) — Preparations are underway for the USS Constitution's move to dry dock for major restoration. The world's oldest commissioned warship still afloat will begin undergoing two years of repairs at the Charlestown Navy Yard historical park in Boston beginning Tuesday. The dry dock is being flooded today to allow the historic ship to enter tomorrow. The ship will remain open to visitors during most of the work, which begins in June.
