MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Officials say a fall from a hotel balcony has killed a U.S. Navy sailor in the Gulf nation of Bahrain. The Navy says the sailor was on liberty at the time from his assignment to the destroyer USS Farragut. The ship was docked in the capital, Manama, as part of a routine port visit. Bahrain is the longtime host of the 5th Fleet.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A Taliban suicide car bomber has killed three people in Afghanistan's capital. The bomb went off near the international airport in Kabul. Officials say 18 people were wounded and the target appeared to be vehicles of the European Union police training mission.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Security issues are front and center as Secretary of State John Kerry has discussion in South Korea amid fresh fears of North Korean belligerence. Kerry arrived in Seoul today from Beijing and will see top South Korean officials tomorrow. The meeting comes less than a week after South Korea's spy agency said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered his defense chief executed.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — A Syrian town that is home to one of the most famous world heritage sites in the Middle East is being contested by Islamic State extremists but a government official says the situation is "fully under control." The official says Syrian troops recaptured two hills from the militants and that reinforcements and fortifications have been sent to Palmyra.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — There are no immediate reports of any deaths or injuries from a powerful storm system stretching from Texas to Minnesota. The storm is still making trouble today in the nation's midsection after kicking up damaging tornadoes in Oklahoma and heavy wind and rain around the region.
