PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Some passengers say they climbed out of windows to escape an Amtrak train that derailed in Philadelphia last night. The train was traveling from Washington, D.C. to New York City when Mayor Michael Nutter says all seven train cars left the tracks, including the engine. At least five people area dead and more than 140 people have been taken to hospitals to be either evaluated or treated.
BOSTON (AP) — Closing arguments are set for today in the penalty phase of the Boston Marathon bomber's trial. Prosecutors and lawyers for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv) have a final chance to make their case for life in prison or the death penalty. Prosecutors have portrayed Tsarnaev as a callous, unrepentant terrorist who carried out the deadly attack with his radicalized older brother, Tamerlan. Tsarnaev's lawyers say Tsarnaev was was heavily influenced by Tamerlan.
SYDNEY (AP) — Search crews hunting for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 off the coast western Australia have discovered a shipwreck. Officials say the unexpected find came when sonar equipment on board a search vessel scouring the Indian Ocean for the missing jetliner detected a cluster of objects nearly 2.5 miles below the surface. Analysis of photos revealed this week that the debris is from a previously uncharted shipwreck. Marine archaeologists are now examining the photos.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The family of a CIA operative killed in the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, is in talks with the spy agency to expand survivor benefits for relatives of contractors who die in the line of duty. The negotiations are in part to resolve a lawsuit against the CIA and the State Department brought by the mother of Glen Doherty, a former Navy SEAL who was one of the four Americans killed in Benghazi. Doherty was single with no kids, and the standard insurance policy pays survivor benefits to only spouses and dependents.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Ten kids are competing today in the finals of this year's National Geographic Bee. The winner of the competition will receive a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society and a trip to the Galapagos Islands. The finalists are from 10 to 14 years old and include nine newcomers to the national competition. The finals air Friday evening on the National Geographic Channel.
