NEW ORLEANS (AP) — NASA has awarded Xavier University of Louisiana a five-year, $5 million grant to improve the performance and safety of lithium batteries while helping underrepresented minority undergraduates prepare for careers in science, technology, engineering and math fields.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports (http://bit.ly/1ct3G7M ) NASA awarded 10 such grants nationally totaling nearly $47 million as part of its Minority University Research and Education Project. The chosen projects were selected from 76 proposals reviewed by education and technical experts.
In addition to the project, Xavier officials say the university will use the money to create a research center called the SHELiB Center, designed to unite faculty from its chemistry, physics and engineering departments.
