OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Boston's Shane Victorino has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and is starting in right field and batting seventh for the opener of a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics.

He had been sidelined since April 25, retroactive to April 23, with a strained right hamstring that he injured April 22 against the Tampa Bay Rays. Manager John Farrell says Victorino will get breaks as needed to keep him fresh and healthy, and "we want Shane to go out and play as he's capable." Certainly everybody hopes Victorino's bat could give the Red Sox a boost.

Infielder Luis Jimenez was designated for assignment to clear roster room.
