HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — A public memorial will be held today in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for two young city police officers who were gunned down Saturday during a traffic stop. Officer Liquori Tate, who was 25, had graduated from the police academy last year. Thirty-four-year-old Officer Benjamin Deen, a married father of two, is a former "Officer of the Year." Meanwhile, three people accused in their deaths have an initial court appearance today.
VAN, Texas (AP) — The fire marshal in Van Zandt County, Texas says about a third of the city of Van sustained some kind of damage from yesterday's severe storm that's believed to have been a tornado. Authorities say about two dozen people were injured and some homes were completely destroyed. The storm was part of severe weather that stretched across North Texas on Sunday.
TECUMSEH, Neb. (AP) — Inmates at a prison in southeast Nebraska have taken control of at least part of the facility. Department of Correctional Services says it began Sunday afternoon at Tecumseh (teh-KUHM'-sah) State Correctional Institution when staff members tried to break up a large gathering of inmates in front of a housing unit. Two staff members were assaulted and one inmate was shot and fires were set in "multiple housing units." The Journal-Star says it received a call from an inmate just before 11 p.m., who said, "We've pretty much taken the whole prison."
MOSCOW (AP) — Russian news agencies are reporting that Secretary of State John Kerry will meet Tuesday with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Sochi to discuss ongoing unrest in Ukraine, Syria and Yemen. The state news agency RIA-Novosti says the Kremlin is hoping that Kerry will bring new proposals on settling continued unrest in Ukraine. Ukraine continues to be embroiled in sporadic conflict despite a cease-fire being sealed in mid-February.
NICE, France (AP) — How's this for an awesome boss? The billionaire chief executive of the Chinese conglomerate Tiens has given 6,400 of his best salespeople a vacation that started in Paris and ended with a parade. CEO Li Jinyuan says he was celebrating the company's 20th anniversary by rewarding his staff.
