ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (AP) — A Long Island high school principal is taking her fight against Common Core standards to a new level.
Newsday says (http://nwsdy.li/1Rt5dLm ) 62-year-old Carol Burris is quitting her job as principal of South Side High School in Rockville Centre in June to fight what she says are harmful education reforms.
She's been South Side's principal for 15 years.
She wrote a book in 2012 supporting the Common Core standards but later reversed her position.
Burris says the state's recent push to make student performance count for half of a teacher's ratings provoked her move.
She contends the standards aren't developmentally appropriate.
Burris says she plans to work with similarly-minded education advocates.
One of the high school's assistant principals, John Murphy, will take over on July 1.
