LAYTON — A 23-year-old Layton mother and her boyfriend have been booked into jail on suspicion of abusing the woman's 2-year-old child.
Jasmine Bridgeman, 23, and Joshua Schoenenberger, 34, were arrested after they took Bridgeman's toddler to Davis Hospital shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday. The child was having difficulty breathing and doctors identified "injuries consistent with on-going physical abuse as well as recent traumatic injuries," according to Layton police.
The child was taken to Primary Children's Hospital and underwent surgery for critical injuries. The child remained in the hospital in critical condition Saturday night.
Bridgeman and Schoenenberger are both being investigated for felony child abuse, as well as misdemeanor child abuse based on indications the toddler had been abused in the past.
Police believe the abuse happened at 224 E. 1450 North, which neighbors identified as Schoenenberger's house. Investigators did not confirm whether the couple has additional children.
A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said she saw police in the neighborhood Saturday morning. She said she didn't know Shoenenberger well but had talked to him a few times.
"He was polite, he was friendly, he was joking," the woman said. "There were a couple of times his son was around, and he just seemed like a loving father."
She said she didn't know Shoenenberger had a girlfriend, but another neighbor told KSL News he recently saw the couple walking together with a toddler and an infant.
Schoenenberger was charged with second-degree felony child abuse in 2010 after police say he choked a child and burned the child on the arm with a cigarette. He pleaded guilty to reduced charges of reckless endangerment, a class A misdemeanor.
According to state court records, Schoenenberger was charged with felony drug possession on November, January and March.
Bridgeman does not have a significant criminal history in the state of Utah.
