JONESBORO, Ga. (AP) — A Georgia police standards group says it's opening an investigation into an incident in which authorities say a woman was shot and critically wounded by a sheriff.
Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill has vowed to stay on the job after being charged with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, in the Sunday shooting of real estate agent Gwenevere McCord in Gwinnett County.
Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council Executive Director Ken Vance said Hill's misdemeanor charge is unlikely to have any immediate impact on his ability to serve as sheriff.
However, Vance said the organization is opening an investigation into whether Hill will be able to retain his certification as a law enforcement officer. He added that the investigation will likely begin after the misdemeanor case is resolved in court.
