CAIRO (AP) — The Islamic State group is claiming responsibility for a weekend attack outside a center near Dallas, Texas, that displayed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. The extremist group says on its Al Bayan radio station that "two soldiers of the caliphate" carried out the attack and that IS promises to deliver more in the future. It's the first time the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack in the United States, but it's unclear if the group is just opportunistically claiming the shooting as its own.
MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry has made an unannounced trip to Somalia in a show of solidarity with a government trying to defeat al-Qaida-allied militants. He' the first top U.S. diplomat ever to visit Somalia. Kerry arrived at Mogadishu's airport around noon local time today and immediately entered a series of planned meetings that include Somalia's president, prime minister and regional leaders, and civil society groups. Top of the agenda is the fight against al-Shabab militants.
ROME (AP) — Another migrant tragedy may have happened in the Mediterranean. Officials from the aid group Save the Children say survivors are telling them that "dozens" of their fellow passengers fell out of their rubber boat and likely drowned as a rescue vessel was on its way. The incident is believed to have happened Sunday in the sea between Libya and Sicily.
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Authorities in Greece say the body of a 4-year-old Bulgarian girl believed to have been killed by her father will likely never be found. Police say the child's remains were dumped in various trash bins in Athens "in a way that it was not possible to determine they were body parts." The girl's mother reported her missing April 24, but had first said the child was left with an acquaintance. Police have charged the 27-year-old father with murder and defiling a body. The mother was arrested on charges of endangering a child.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A police officer in Raleigh, North Carolina is suing Starbucks after his free cup of coffee spilled on him and he got burned. Jury selection is underway in a civil trial in which Matthew Kohr is asking for $50,000 for burns, blisters and emotional damage after his coffee spilled in 2012. WRAL-TV says Kohr is claiming that the incident caused severe stress, activated his Crohn's disease and resulted in his needing surgery to remove part of his intestine.
