KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nick Castellanos has singled off Kansas City Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera with nobody out in the eighth inning for the first hit by the Detroit Tigers.

Chris Young and reliever Ryan Madson combined on a no-hit bid for Kansas City through seven innings Friday night. Herrera came on in the eighth and walked his first batter before Castellanos lined a clean single to left field.

Young, who was making his first start of the season, was pulled when his pitch count reached 81 after five innings with the Royals leading 4-0. He struck out nine and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth when he walked three straight. He threw 34 pitches in the inning.

Madson replaced Young and worked two perfect innings.
