NEW YORK (AP) — The elevator ride to the top of the World Trade Center takes only 47 seconds.

But by the time riders reach the 102nd floor observatory, they will see a historical time lapse of lower Manhattan.

The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/1DD6B78 ) says the panoramic images are displayed on three high-definition monitors of the elevators that go the observatory.

The images begin in the 1500s and quickly move through the centuries showing the changing face of New York City.

For less than four seconds, the facade of the doomed south tower of the former trade center appears.

The observatory opens May 29.
