NEW CITY, N.Y. (AP) — A suburban New York animal control officer has tested positive for rabies after being bit by a raccoon.
Pat Coleman was being treated with a series of vaccinations. She was bitten on the leg on Tuesday near Maple Avenue in New City.
Police Chief Michael Sullivan tells the Journal News (http://lohud.us/1OM4t1B ) that she is doing fine.
Coleman, who works for the Clarkstown police department, has been an animal control officer for over three decades.
Police say the raccoon lunged at her in the parking lot of the police station. She captured the creature with a noose attached to her dog pole.
County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Ruppert says rabies continues to be a serious public health problem in Rockland County.
