MERCURY, Nev. (AP) — Six U.S. Congress members visited the mothballed site of a proposed national nuclear waste repository outside Las Vegas, where one said Congress should make a decision about entombing the nation's spent reactor fuel in Nevada. The tour came just weeks after one of the nuclear dump's staunchest opponents, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, announced he'll retire after 2016.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada committee has killed a proposed constitutional amendment that would require any tax increase on the ballot to win a two-thirds majority to move forward. The measure would have brought ballot measures in line with a rule in the Legislature that requires a two-thirds vote to pass a tax increase. Opponents said it would make ballot measures nearly impossible to pass and said it would fundamentally change the concept of majority rule.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — An Assembly committee has passed a bill that would designate more Nevada elected offices as nonpartisan. Existing law designates some races as nonpartisan, including ones for judges, school board members and regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education. The bill adds to the list of races in which political parties aren't listed. The county clerk, constable, district attorney and assessor are among the new additions.
CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are reviewing a bill allowing for separate toll lanes to be built on Interstate 11. Republican Assemblyman Jim Wheeler says the bill would allow partnerships between public and private organizations to build toll lanes on I-11 to alleviate traffic and raise money for other transportation projects.
