DELISLE, Miss. (AP) — A Harrison County company is paying a $4,875 civil fine and giving $14,625 to the Harrison County School District to buy a school bus.
DuPont Co.'s Delisle plant agreed with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality to pay $19,500 in penalties. DuPont failed to conduct a pollution test for sulfur dioxide on a smokestack within the required two-year time frame. DuPont tested 137 days late.
Based in Delaware, DuPont makes titanium dioxide used to whiten paints, plastics and paper in DeLisle.
The school district will use the money to buy a bus with lower diesel emissions.
Plant manager Mark Smith signed the order Jan. 27, waiving hearing rights.
The plant is Mississippi's largest single releaser of toxic chemicals. It was fined $117,000 in 2012 after pollution control equipment broke down.
