LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — The Port of Lewiston has laid off two of four employees in its shipping container operation and shifted another one to part time.
The Lewiston Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1Fr3QDP) that officials announced the decision Wednesday at a port commission meeting that came a day after the port's container traffic was put on hold indefinitely.
Shipper Hapag-Lloyd confirmed Tuesday that the company is no longer calling on the Port of Portland and will use other locations. Hapag-Lloyd represented about 20 percent of Portland's container business but more than 90 percent of the Port of Lewiston's, upriver in Idaho.
Lewiston Port Manager David Doeringsfeld says it's too soon to know what effect the container shutdown will have on the port's finances.
