WEST VALLEY CITY — Two people were arrested early Thursday after fleeing from West Valley police and crashing into a canal.
A West Valley officer attempted to pull over a suspicious vehicle in an area where there had been reports of criminal activity, said West Valley Police Lt. Lamont Cox. Instead, the driver and a female passenger sped away. Officers caught up with the Nissan truck near 2700 West 3800 South.
Police called off the chase for safety concerns just as the vehicle went into Mountain View Mobile Home Park, 2771 S. 2670 West.
But the truck, a stolen rental vehicle, kept going once the driver saw officers surround the area. The driver crashed through a gate at the end of a dead end road, apparently not realizing it dropped off into a canal, Cox said.
Both the driver and passenger, uninjured from the crash, got out and ran. They were captured a short time later with help from police K9 units, said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
Darin Joshua Terry, 21, and Angelica Chavez, 21, were arrested for investigation of fleeing and interfering with an arresting officer.
According to Utah State Court records, Terry was charged March 26 in 3rd District Court with theft by receiving stolen property, a third-degree felony; drug possession, a third-degree felony; and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class-B misdemeanor.
