SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah officials say some residents may need to verify their identities with the state tax commission before receiving their tax refunds this year.
The Utah State Tax Commission says it has seen a spike in the number of attempts this year to steal identities of taxpayers and fraudulently collect tax refunds.
Spokesman Charlie Roberts says Utah residents are receiving letters and questionnaires from the tax commission asking them to verify their identity.
He says some residents have questioned if the documents are a scam but he says they are needed in order to receive a refund.
He says anyone concerned may contact the tax commission at 801 297-2200.
