PHOENIX (AP) — Gov. Doug Ducey has signed a bill that makes all children living on Indian reservations qualified for private school vouchers.
Senate Bill 1332 is designed to give children on reservations more school choice.
The Republican-controlled House and Senate passed the bill mainly along party lines. Ducey's office announced the signing on Tuesday.
Voucher expansion opponents argue they take money from public schools already facing tight budgets.
Democratic Sen. Carlyle Begay of Ganado sponsored the bill. He was the deciding Senate vote on the state budget backed by Ducey.
A larger voucher bill never got a vote in the just-ended Legislative session. It would have allowed students turned away from any public school or public charter school that's within 25 miles of their home to get a private school voucher.
