ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) — The chairman of the board of trustees of financially troubled South Carolina State University is stepping down.
Media outlets report that William Small Jr. is leaving the chairman's post, but a university spokeswoman says he will remain a member of the board.
Small cited health problems and recent problems with state lawmakers as the reason for his resignation last Friday.
State lawmakers are in recess this week, but the Legislature is expected to pass a bill that would fire the university's entire board. Both the House and Senate have passed separate versions, which differ mostly in who would appoint the temporary takeover board.
The state Budget and Control Board was told last month that the university's escalating debt could reach almost $24 million this summer.
