(KSL News) A three-car pile-up shut down two lanes of I-15 last night for at least an hour.

It happened near 9000 South.

Utah Highway Patrol says a Dodge broke down, so the driver pulled off to the right shoulder then tried to merge back on the road.

A van slammed into the back of the Dodge and a pickup truck rear-ended the van.

Traffic came to a complete halt while the Dodge driver was flown to the hospital with critical injuries. Two lanes of the interstate were closed for about an hour while crews cleaned up the wreckage.

UHP has a warning for drivers who hit the road during this busy week for travelers.

Sgt. Chad Hecker, UHP: "Take extra time to get where you are going. Make sure you're wearing your seatbelt. Make sure you're not impaired in your driving. Go safely, and have a good weekend."

Troopers say the driver's seatbelt likely saved his life.
