FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — There's word of a fatal incident outside the gate at Fort Meade in Maryland -- the home of the U.S. National Security Agency. A senior U.S. official says preliminary reports indicate that one person is dead after a car with two people inside tried to ram the gate at the base. The official says there was an exchange of fire, and at least one of the two people in the car was killed. But the FBI says the incident isn't believed to be related to terrorism.
SEYNE-LES-ALPES, France (AP) — As authorities learn more about the mental treatment received by Andreas Lubitz, they're also continuing the painstaking effort to identify the 150 people who died on the plane he flew into a mountain in the French Alps last week. Workers with backhoes and tractors are clearing a road to the remote crash site, to help speed the investigation. Prosecutors today revealed that Lubitz had received treatment for suicidal tendencies several years ago.
BOSTON (AP) — At the trial of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev (joh-HAHR' tsahr-NEYE'-ehv), jurors today have seen a photo of Tsarnaev standing several feet behind an eight-year-old boy who would be killed in the second blast. They've also seen the blood-stained, shredded clothing of the boy, Martin Richard, as a doctor testified about his fatal injuries. Martin's parents listened from the second row of the courtroom.
MOORE HAVEN, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff's deputy says the driver of an overloaded church van didn't see the stop sign that the van ran though on a dark, rural highway overnight. It nosedived into a canal, killing eight people and injuring ten others. The van was headed back to a church in Fort Pierce, north of West Palm Beach, after a weekend convention in Fort Myers. The 18 people were in a van that only had 15 seats.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A 4-year-old Philadelphia girl has been returned safely to her parents after slipping out of her house at 3 a.m. and getting on a transit bus in search of a snack. The bus driver says the girl was swinging her legs as she chanted, "All I want is a Slushie." Surveillance video showed the preschooler sitting on the bus early Friday, chatting to other passengers. The driver stopped the bus and called police. They took the girl to a hospital, where she was reunited with her mother. Authorities say the girl's family didn't know she had awoken and left the house during a downpour. They don't plan on filing charges.
