KENNER, La. (AP) — Authorities say a man who went after New Orleans airport security agents and passengers with a machete and bug spray also had Molotov cocktails. The sheriff says White is in the hospital after being shot three times by a sheriff's lieutenant.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York fire officials say firefighters arrived at a burning home in Brooklyn less than four minutes after receiving the call -- but it was already too late. The fire had spread through the kitchen, dining room, stairway and rear bedrooms. Seven siblings killed, ranging in age from 5 to 16. Their mother and a teenage sister escaped by jumping from the second floor, but suffered burns and smoke inhalation. Officials think it started with a hotplate left on in the kitchen.

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine (AP) — A man who was on a chairlift at a Maine ski resort today says it was "really scary" when the lift stopped and the chairs began sliding backward down the mountain. The accident at Sugarloaf Mountain Resort happened five years after eight skiers were hurt when one of its chairlifts derailed.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Nash has announced his retirement after a 19-year NBA career that included two MVP awards. The 41-year-old Canadian has played in just 65 games over the past three seasons due to injuries. He says he already misses the game, but he's also excited to learn to do something else. The eight-time All-Star is third in NBA history with 10,335 assists, trailing only John Stockton and Jason Kidd. Nash also is the best free-throw shooter in NBA history at 90.4 percent.
