LYNDONVILLE, Vt. (AP) — Lyndon State College has laid off five staff members and has reduced courses taught by part-time faculty to make up for an "unexpectedly large" decline in new students and anticipated shortfalls.

The college said the decline resulted in a $1.5 million gap that was closed with budget cuts, a hiring freeze and money from reserves.

The administration anticipates a shortfall of about $3.1 million in 2015-16.

Lyndon says a number of faculty and staff vacancies will be left unfilled, some employees have taken advantage of early retirement incentives and other positions have been restructured.

Lyndon hopes to expand a program making attending college easier for current high school seniors; develop a partnership with Northern Essex Community College to bring three bachelor degree programs there; and bring international students on campus.
