SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — The assistant director of high school sports in Utah has been named the new executive director of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association.

The NIAA's Board of Control voted Monday night in Sparks to hire Bart Thompson for the job overseeing prep athletics throughout Nevada.

Thompson is a 1983 graduate of Weber State who was a teacher and coach for 22 years Viewmont High School in Bountiful, Utah.

He told the Reno Gazette-Journal (http://tinyurl.com/qxh63bn ) he's excited and looking forward to the new opportunity.

Thompson replaces Eddie Bonine, who was hired in December to direct high school sports in Louisiana.

Board members say they were especially impressed with his experience working with the Utah legislature.

The other four finalists included NIAA assistant director Donnie Nelson and former Elko principal Michael Altenburg.
