Gene Kennedy reporting A bizarre and bloody beginning to the Memorial Day weekend as two men riding on Redwood Road near 1100 South together started shooting and stabbing each other! It began with a shooting, then a stabbing, then an accident with another car.
The chain of events began around 6 p.m. Friday in Salt Lake City. Two men were in a car driving south on Redwood Road in Salt Lake City. We're not sure if they're related or what their connection to each other is, but they got into an argument. Police don't know what the argument was about, but one of the passengers shot the other in the leg. That person then stabbed the other multiple times.
It was all-out bloody violence inside a moving car. The driver of the car lost control and hit a minivan, which had an older man inside. Seconds after that crash, the shooter tried to take off.
Det. Jeff Bedard with the Salt Lake City Police Department, said, "We've got a pretty big crime scene. The shooter, after the vehicle came to a rest here, got out of the car and ran towards those rock piles. We had to apprehend him out there. It's amazing he even made it that far with the multiple stab wounds."
Police say they recovered a gun and knife at the scene. The two men who were fighting are in serious condition. As for the older man who was hit, paramedics took him to the hospital, and police say he suffered only minor injuries.
The entire incident will take a lot for police to sort out. Detectives say they're not sure if there's a gang connection here. They'll interview the two men once their conditions have improved.
