TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa is receiving a $250,000 grant to continue research into ovarian cancer in older women, for whom the disease often is more aggressive.
The money comes from the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research. On Monday, the partners also announced a campaign aimed at raising another $1 million in support of ovarian cancer research at Moffitt.
The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/17OwSmQ) reports that the winning grant application came from Dr. Martine Extermann, a medical oncologist in the Senior Adult Oncology Program at Moffitt.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is named for the former NC State University head women's basketball coach. Yow was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 before succumbing to the disease on Jan. 24, 2009.
