(KSL News) -- A newborn is in detox tonight and will be for perhaps several weeks, after testing positive for heroin.
The child was born last week at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. Police say the baby's mother and boyfriend were caught with heroin at the hospital after the woman gave birth, and they believe the heroin got into the baby's system after the mother used it.
Capt. Rick Healey, Provo Police Dept.: "It probabl does reflect the seriousness of the addiction in the sense that the mother, who generally is completely devoted to the welfare of her child, now is so devoted to drugs that she is willing to put aside the dangers to the baby."
Police have charged the woman's boyfriend, Isaiah Banks, with possession of heroin and drug paraphenalia. They've turned over the case of the mother, 22-year-old Jane Cloward, to the county attorney's office, which is investigating.
