WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve Bank of New York says manufacturing activity in New York state expanded at a modest pace in February, held back by weaker orders and hiring. The bank's Empire State manufacturing index slipped to 7.8 this month from 10 in January. The New York survey provides an early look at U.S. manufacturing each month.
WATERTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Just a few years after Michigan leaders talked excitedly about building a Silicon Valley-style workforce, the state is putting renewed emphasis on training welders, machinists, electricians and other blue-collar workers. Gov. Rick Snyder says the pendulum has swung too far toward encouraging students to get a four-year degree when they should also consider an apprenticeship or a community college program. He says there aren't enough qualified people to replace Michigan's aging skilled tradesmen.
NEW YORK (AP) — Burger King and Tim Hortons parent company Restaurant Brands International is reporting a loss for its fourth quarter, blaming costs related to a deal to combine the two chains. Restaurants Brands is about 51 percent-owned by investment firm 3G Capital, which bought Burger King in 2010 and took it public again in 2012. The company closed a deal to buy Tim Hortons in December.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The museum that houses the National Toy Hall of Fame is establishing a World Video Game Hall of Fame. The Strong museum in Rochester says the video hall will recognize electronic games of all types: arcade, console, computer, handheld and mobile. Anyone will be able to nominate a video game, and an internal advisory committee will choose finalists. Nominations for the inaugural class are being accepted through the end of March.
