COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The director of the University of South Carolina's Women's and Gender Studies Program is speaking on AIDS in America in the 1980s.
Ed Madden is speaking Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in the Hollings Library Program Room in the Thomas Cooper Library.
A reception sponsored by the Thomas Cooper Society follows the talk. Guests will be able to tour a new exhibit on the disease that features material from the Library's Department of Rare Books and Special Collections.
AIDS stands for the acquired immune deficiency syndrome, which weakens the body's immune system.
The exhibit shows how news about the disease and its consequences spread through gay and scientific circles as well as the media during that time frame.
The event is free and open to the public.
