Monmouth holds on to beat Canisius 44-40

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (AP) — Justin Robinson scored six of his nine points down the stretch and Monmouth held on to beat Canisius 44-40 on Sunday.

Monmouth (13-12, 9-5 Metro Atlantic) remains tied with Manhattan for third place in the conference, 2 ½ games back of Iona (18-6, 11-2).

Robinson hit back-to-back jumpers, sparking an 11-2 run to give the Hawks 42-34 lead with 3:06 remaining. Jermaine Crumpton and Kassius Robertson each hit a 3 to pull Canisius within 42-40 with 51 seconds left. Robinson then made a pair of free throws with 4 seconds left to end it.

Brice Kofane added nine points, and no Monmouth player reached double figures. The Hawks shot just 14 of 44 from the field (31.8 percent), but outrebounded the Golden Griffins 37-32.

Zach Lewis hit two 3-pointers and scored 11 points to lead Canisius (12-11, 7-7), which shot 34 percent overall.
