MARTIN, Tenn. (AP) — Marshun Newell scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds for his fifth career double-double in leading UT-Martin to a 64-59 victory over SIU-Edwardsville on Saturday night.
Alex Anderson made 3 of 4 3-point attempts in adding 15 points for the Skyhawks (15-8, 7-3 Ohio Valley Conference).
Kris Davis scored 18 points and Rozell Nunn 12 for the Cougars (9-13, 5-6).
Trailing by two with five minutes left in the game Newell scored six unanswered points to give the Skyhawks the lead for good at 58-54. Davis and UTM's Twymond Howard exchanged baskets before the Cougars' C.J. Carr sank a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game, 60-59, with 1:41 remaining. But the Cougars missed a pair of 3-pointers and Chandler Rowe and Anderson both scored in the final 25 seconds to secure the win.
UTM is off to its best start in OVC play since its 2008-09 conference championship team.
