LAS VEGAS (AP) — An undercover police detective is facing a driving under the influence charge and an internal affairs investigation after a 911 caller reported seeing a driver asleep at the wheel of a vehicle in northwest Las Vegas.
Police said Monday that Officer Russell Backman was arrested about 4 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Hualapai (WAHL'-uh-peye) Way and Sahara Avenue.
Jail records showed Monday that Backman was released pending an initial court appearance. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer.
Police say Backman has been a Las Vegas officer for almost 15 years, and is assigned to the department's organized crime bureau.
Officer Larry Hadfield says Backman's age and booking photo weren't made public because he works undercover.
