CHICAGO (AP) — A powerful storm has moved from the Plains into the Midwest. The most intense period of snow is expected to hit this evening, just as people gather for Super Bowl parties. Forecasters warn that the snow combined with windy conditions could make driving treacherous. Chicago's Department of Aviation says more than 1,000 flights have been canceled at O'Hare and Midway airports.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The budget proposal President Barack Obama will unveil tomorrow calls for a six-year, $478 billion public works program of highway, bridge and transit upgrades. White House officials say half of it would be financed with a one-time mandatory tax on profits that U.S. companies have amassed overseas. The foreign earnings tax would be part of a broader administration plan to overhaul corporate taxes by ending certain tax breaks and lowering rates.
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Thousands of immigrants seeking legalization through the U.S. court system have had their hearings canceled. They're being told by the government that it may be 2019 or later before their futures are resolved. The increase in cancellations began late last summer after the Justice Department prioritized the tens of thousands of Central American migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, most of them mothers with children and accompanied minors.
MADRID (AP) — Spain says 400 African migrants tried to storm border fences separating its North African enclave of Melilla from Morocco. The Interior Ministry said the migrants charged past Moroccan border forces today by throwing rocks, but were repelled by Spanish guards. A statement says groups of around 1,000 migrants have approached the border fences almost every day throughout January. Thousands of African migrants living illegally in Morocco try to enter the Spanish enclaves each year.
NEW YORK (AP) — "American Sniper" has shot down another box-office record: Its $31.9 million is the biggest Super Bowl weekend gross ever. According to studio estimates, the Clint Eastwood film narrowly surpassed the previous top Super Bowl weekend draw. The concert film "Hanna Montana/Miley Cyrus: The Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" earned $31.1 million in 2008.
