ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Top names at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering are lending support to a concert fundraiser for organizers of a protest over federal land and water management in the West.
Cowboy poet Waddie Mitchell is slated to host an event Thursday in Elko that will also feature singers and songwriters Michael Martin Murphy, Don Edwards, R.W. Hampton, Brenn Hill and Andy Hedges.
Mitchell tells the Elko Daily Free Press (http://bit.ly/1CyVV9w ) the donation event and auction aims to raise $40,000 to pay costs of last year's cross-country horseback ride dubbed the Grass March Cowboy Express.
Participants in the Carson City-to-Washington, D.C., protest highlighted opposition to federal Bureau of Land Management grazing allotment policies in the Battle Mountain area.
The 31st annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering is being held at several venues in Elko.
