This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Back in the 1970s, when shag carpet was all the rage, Dewey Whitehead worked for a floor covering company. Later, he decided it was time to branch out and start his own company, which led to the creation of Shag Rug La.

Shag Rug La is a floor and window covering store. The business features top-quality luxury carpets in the newest styles as well as classic and commercial carpets for active families. Experienced and friendly staff members help customers select the products that best fits their needs.

Dewey's son, Kurt Whitehead, tells me he and his four siblings grew up in the business, and all but one are still involved in daily business affairs. Kurt has enjoyed watching carpet trends change over the years. When the business opened, shag carpet was all the rage; hence the reason for the company's name. Shag eventually went out of fashion and brands such as Berber became popular. In the last 10 years, shag carpet has become the trend once again, which is nice because Kurt says it means the company doesn't have to change its name.

The business was originally located in West Valley City but moved to a new store in South Jordan in August 2007. The 7,000-square-foot showroom has a wide variety of flooring and window coverings customers can choose from. Selection is enhanced with an abundance of natural light in the showroom that comes from two full walls of double-story windows — a state-of-the-art innovation the Whiteheads added.

In addition to sales and installation, Shag Rug La also designs and manufactures custom draperies in its own workroom facilities located on the second floor of the business. The window covering selection also includes popular styles of shutters and blinds.

The Whitehead family remains committed to doing whatever they can to ensure Shag Rug La customers are 100 percent satisfied with their flooring and window coverings.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
