RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The University of Richmond is planning to install solar panels atop its recreation center to help generate campus power.
Officials say the university reached an agreement with Staunton-based solar energy developer Secure Futures for the installation.
Once complete, the panels will allow the university to generate more than 226,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. That's equivalent to the annual electricity needs for one campus residence hall.
Installation is expected to begin in July 2015, and the panels will begin generating electricity ahead of the 2015 school year.
Officials say the project helps the university get closer to its goal of a 30 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2020. The panels could potentially offset the emission of more than 344,000 pounds of carbon dioxide.
