PARIS (AP) — Funerals are being held today for at least four of the six staff members of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, who were killed last week in their offices in Paris. Meanwhile, police say they don't believe a car running into a police officer overnight in Paris had anything to do with the terror attacks that rocked the city last week. The incident early today happened at the Elysee Palace. A policewoman guarding the French presidential palace was slightly injured.
MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Pope Francis has arrived in the Philippines, Asia's most populous Catholic nation. Church bells tolled across the country and hundreds of children danced and waved small Philippine and Vatican flags as the pontiff emerged from the plane in Manila.The government has declared national holidays during the pope's visit, which runs through Monday.
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — An official in Poland says filmmaker Roman Polanski has been questioned by a prosecutor concerning a U.S. request for his extradition on 1977 sex charges. A spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office in Krakow says the prosecutor questioned Polanski late yesterday and is writing a report for the court that will decide whether to extradite him. Last year, Krakow prosecutors refused a U.S. request to arrest the now 81-year-old Oscar-winning filmmaker.
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — The Mexican government will start issuing birth certificates at its consulates in the United States today to Mexican citizens in the U.S. illegally. It's to help them apply for work permits, driver's licenses and protection from deportation.
NEW YORK (AP) — A city investigation into New York City jail hiring practices has found dozens of recently hired guards have gang ties, previous arrests and otherwise checkered histories. The report by the city Department of Investigation says the recruiting, hiring and screening of jail guards is riddled with problems. Investigators found red flags in the applications of 54 of the 153 guards hired last year.
