PARIS (AP) — Charlie Hebdo's defiant issue is in print. It features a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad on the cover, holding a sign saying "I am Charlie" and the words "All is forgiven" above him. Twelve people, including much of the editorial staff, died when two masked gunmen assaulted the newspaper's offices last week. Charlie Hebdo has faced repeated threats for depictions of Muhammad.
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel has held an emotional funeral for the four Jewish victims of the terror attack on a kosher supermarket in Paris. Thousands of mourners joined Israeli leaders and the families of the four victims and the ceremony was broadcast live on all Israeli TV channels. Meanwhile in Paris, French President Francois Hollande (frahn-SWAH' oh-LAWND') paid tribute to the three police officers killed in the attacks, placing Legion of Honor medals on their caskets.
DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian officials say 10 civilians have been killed and 13 of wounded in rebel shelling of a military checkpoint in eastern Ukraine. The victims were in a bus that was passing through the checkpoint. The Russian news agency Tass says rebel officials are denying responsibility for the attack and calling the accusation "disinformation." Fighting between the Ukrainian government troops and pro-Russian rebels has killed more than 4,700 people since April.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Columbus Fire Department says 89 fires were reported near Ohio State's campus in the hours after the Buckeyes won the first national title game in college football's playoffs. The fire chief says most of the fires involved trash bins and couches, and no injuries were reported. Police made a handful of arrests early after using tear gas and pepper spray to disperse some Ohio State students and football fans who spilled by the thousands into streets to celebrate the team's 42-20 win over Oregon.
NEW YORK (AP) — Facebook users in the U.S. will soon receive Amber Alerts to help find missing children who may be located near them. Facebook is working with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to send the alerts to users' mobile phones if they are in a search area where a child has been abducted. Facebook says several children have been reunited with their families as a result of information shared on the site.
