SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Mormon church has announced the creation of 11 new missions worldwide, including two in Utah. Joining Logan and Orem with new missions are Modesto, California; Yakima, Washington; Trinidad, Costa Rica, Peru, Bolivia, Portugal and Argentina, which lands two new missions. At the same time Friday, the church announced two Salt Lake City missions would be combined into one for a net gain of 10 new missions.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A group of sportsmen and conservationists is trying to rally opposition to Barrick Gold Corp.'s plans to expand a major gold mine in northeast Nevada, a move the critics say could harm the state's largest herd of mule deer. The Coalition for Nevada's Wildlife says the major expansion proposed at the Bald Mountain Mine would disrupt a key migration route the deer use in the winter about 80 miles west of the Utah line. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is expected to release a draft environmental impact statement later this month on the plan.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah lawmaker is considering expanding the right to carry a weapon on a bus or train without permission, arguing it should be no different than carrying a gun or knife on the street. Provo Republican Rep. Norman Thurston cites a state hijacking law making it a felony for anyone to carry a concealed gun or dangerous weapon on a bus or train. The law makes exceptions for those with permits or permission from the transit owner. Miriam Walkingshaw of Utah Parents Against Gun Violence says there are greater public safety concerns on a bus or train where many people are in close quarters and loading on and off.
