SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A judge is setting an evidentiary hearing in the case of a former Utah attorney general facing bribery and other charges. Court records show the five-day hearing in the case of John Swallow was scheduled in the chambers of state Judge Paul Parker. Prosecutors are expected to present their evidence against the 52-year-old Swallow during the hearing set to begin June 8.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Incoming speaker of the Utah House Greg Hughes says his predecessor Becky Lockhart has been hospitalized with an undiagnosed condition. Hughes says he and Sen. Curt Bramble, a Lockhart family spokesman, have not released further details about her illness. Lockhart, a 46-year-old Republican from Provo, decided not to seek another term in the Legislature this year.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — President Barack Obama is again nominating Utah Supreme Court Justice Jill Parrish to serve as a federal judge. The U.S. Senate must confirm the nomination. Obama also picked Parrish in September, but the Senate didn't vote on the nomination and it lapsed.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Wildlife officials have created new opportunities for hunting black bears in Utah. The state's population of black bears has risen steadily since the 1990s from 2,000 to 4,100. Wildlife officials say the animals are posing more of a threat to people and livestock. The Utah Wildlife Board approved new permits, hunting times and hunting areas after hearing that about twice as many bears than average had to be euthanized last year.
