Olympic ski jumper Nick Fairall of US to miss season

ANDOVER, N.H. (AP) — Olympic ski jumper Nick Fairall will miss the rest of this season after undergoing back surgery following a fall in Austria.

The 25-year-old jumper from Andover, New Hampshire, was hurt landing a jump. The USA Ski Jumping says on its website he had emergency surgery to stabilize the injuries and was in good spirits.

Fairall is a two-time national champion who competed at the Sochi Games. He was the top American in the large hill, finishing 35th.

On Monday, another U.S. skier from New Hampshire died in an avalanche in Austria. Twenty-year-old Ronnie Berlack of Franconia was a member of the development squad. Also killed was 19-year-old Bryce Astle.
