LAS VEGAS (AP) — A handful of new laws are taking effect in Nevada on Jan. 1. They include the launch of the first-ever Nevada Court of Appeals. The intermediate court is expected to reduce the backlog of cases before the state's Supreme Court. Also, teens under the age of 18 who apply for a driver's license or learner's permit will have to prove they meet the state's minimum school attendance requirements.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Police in Las Vegas say a man who once worked at a Walgreens he's accused of robbing kept one clerk at gunpoint for an hour and looted a store safe before shooting another clerk 11 times and fleeing. Police say robbery, not revenge, was the apparent motive in the pre-dawn Friday crime that left 58-year-old Antonino Isnit dead at a store in northwest Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas judge scheduled a Jan. 13 preliminary hearing for a 24-year-old ex-convict accused of striking two car wash employees with a vehicle earlier this month. Police say 29-year-old Francisco Luis Lorenzo and 26-year-old Jairo Navarro were cleaning a vehicle Dec. 11 when Christopher Blalark backed a 1980s-era Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera into them and drove away.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Las Vegas judge set a Jan. 12 hearing date for a 44-year-old man accused of going on a pre-Christmas robbery spree that ended with him holding a knife to his chest in a crashed car and refusing for several hours to surrender. Eddie Rodriguez is being held on $240,000 bail. Police say Rodriguez told investigators he needed money to buy presents.
