PLAIN CITY, Weber County — A 16-year-old Fremont High student arrested after allegedly taking a loaded gun to school so he could "open fire" on fellow students will face charges in juvenile court.

The high school junior was charged in Weber County Juvenile Court with possession of a weapon with intent to assault, possession of a firearm in a restricted area, possession of a firearm by a minor and illegally carrying a concealed weapon. All the charges are misdemeanors.

On Dec. 1, the teen was arrested at the school, 1900 N. 4700 West, after another student saw the gun in his waistband and immediately told the school resource officer. The officer tracked down the boy and detained him. The boy was carrying a loaded 9 mm with him, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in 2nd District Court.

The teen was allegedly going to shoot a former girlfriend and then "open fire" on the rest of the school, according to the Weber County Sheriff's Office. The school was placed on lockdown for several hours and classrooms were evacuated one by one as SWAT officers searched each student and locker, not knowing if there were any accomplices.

It was determined that the boy acted alone.

The teen told investigators he had taken the weapon from a gun safe belonging to his grandmother, whom he lived with, the report stated. He said he had "been in possession of this firearm for some time. (The teen) said he had been storing it in his bedroom in a gun box," according to the affidavit.

At first the teen told detectives the gun was for "protection" from a potential school shooting, according to court records. He later said he "has had problems" with other students since breaking up with his girlfriend and "was thinking about" her, the warrant stated.

According to the search warrant, investigators seized ammunition found behind a TV at the grandmother's house, "silver hand swords" found in an upstairs closet, and a knife in the same closet.
